Skylark Cafe: The Place to
Be in West Seattle
"You might think that the singularity of the
music venue would have it resting on it's
geography and not trying too hard, certain of
the West Seattle crowd. But this is not the
case with the Skylark, which serves up
excellent grub AND a bomb variety of talented
local music, a hard combination to find in this
town...Just over the bridge, Skylark is well on
its way to becoming one of Seattle's hottest
new venues. Check it out."

"West Seattle has long struggled to find a
solid, attractive spot to function as a live
music destination, and Skylark proprietress
Jessie Summa-Kusiak has finally nailed it with
this cafe's cozy, neighborhood vibe. The
diner-style food is a top-notch combination of
the comforting (homemade meatloaf with all the
trimmings) and the sophisticated (penne with
vodka sauce), while the high quality,
free-of-charge live music draws appreciate
crowds with a mix of indie, rock, and
alt-country acts, and the occasional
singer-songwriter."

Warm Leatherette: The
Skylark Cafe & Club by Jamie Friddle
"Summa-Kusiak, who for years made her living
as a professional graphic designer and as
front-woman for Seattle band Ripley has created
a warm-and-fuzzy rock club that's ecologically
sensitive to West Seattle's salt-air
laissez-faire, where the comfort food is so
cozy you'll want a nap, and where the local
up-and-coming bands are treated like family.
Patrons are treated equally well. Skylark never
charges a cover for its Thursday through
Saturday live music nights. It's rather like
stopping by your best friend's garage for free
jams and eating out of his mother's kitchen.
Almost in spite of its urban-rock progenitors,
Skylark already looks and feels like a venue to
which rock stars might retreat to get to know
themselves again, and to remember where they
come from."

"Skylark kicks out the jams-with no cover-six
nights a week. Thursday through Saturday
features a slew of quality,
soon-to-be-discovered bands (a recent Thursday
showcased H Is for Hellgate and Tiger
Teenagers), while Tuesdays are reserved for
their award-winning karaoke. If they like what
they hear, open mic Wednesday might even get
you a gig. The entertainment alone warrants a
trip, but what puts Skylark over the edge is
the kitchen. The cafe serves up a down-home
menu, from a hearty mac and cheese to the
elusive Monte Cristo-all entirely homemade and
satisfying."

Your favorite place for

"A great music club features solid local and
national talents on its stage at least four
nights a week, playing everything from indie
rock to electronica to alt-country -- and
there's no charge at the door. The Skylark Cafe
& Club in West Seattle is such a place, and
you've given the venue the measure of
recognition it deserves."

"You'll hear a variety of styles, ranging from
alternative rock to emo, punk to power pop, and
everything sounds especially good when there's
never a cover. Bonuses are an innovative
cocktail menu, a respectable selection of draft
beers, and a menu packed with made-from-scratch
comfort foods like chicken-fried steak and mac
and cheese. Come on Sunday for a mouthwatering
brunch."

"I don't make too many trips out to West
Seattle - but if I do, it is almost invariably
to go to the Skylark Cafe. The shows are always
free, they book good bands, the food is tasty,
there's plenty of parking, and the staff is
very friendly."

in Seattle's club scene by Tom

"'Live music with no cover charge' - is that a
great club slogan, or what? At West Seattle's
Skylark Cafe, some of the area's best
up-and-coming bands hit the stage. "

"I always thought that a place that tried to
be too many different things would really suck,
but Skylark actually seems to have gotten it
right: a huge variety of free live music, good
food (including brunch), comedy, BYOV (bring
Your Own Vinyl), open mic, karaoke, and all
ages nights. How do the hell do they do it?!
Here's my guess. First, the variety is on a
schedule. You can check the website ahead of
time so you don't accidentally show up for
"comedy" when what you really wanted was the
latest in alt-country. Second--this is hugely
important--there is no cover charge!"

"Sleek, streamlined, and gleaming like a
muscled Buick, West Seattle's Skylark presents
an engaging atmosphere for everyone, even your
fidgety ex-boyfriend...Nighttime promises the
enchantment of live music or karaoke; sit
together in quiet enjoyment, and watch the
light from a beautiful oyster-shell chandelier
as it cascades upon his shining scalp."

"Come for the tater tots, stay for the live
music. All in a spacious,
retro-industrial-rocker-cool atmosphere with a
welcoming vibe, attentive service, and a killer
black wood bench running the length of the side
wall...We will definitely be back for the
weekend brunch."

"The Skylark is one of a handful of spaces
around the city where the dual purposes of
entertainment and food aren't dueling; where it
makes sense for you to eat a burger while some
brash upstart (or, in this case, an old,
knowing hand) whittles your face into elaborate
scrollwork with the jagged blade of a melodic
line. This is a good thing."

The West has won-live music
at last! by Lori Hinton
The West has won-live music at last! by Lori
Hinton "No longer do you have to hop in the car
for late night drives to see live music in
Ballard, Belltown, or Capitol Hill. Now we can
have it all right here at a nice, affordable
neighborhood price. This "garage-chic" venue
decorated with vintage Buick Skylark ads was
modeled after a combo of cool seattle clubs
such as The Crocodile (for its music and
inexpensive food) and places like the old OK
Hotel and Sit & Spin (for their intimate rock
club scene). Music starts at 9 p.m. and wraps
up by midnight-a fine concept not only for the
neighbors but also for the over-25 working
class music fan who can't afford to be out all
night in order to hear good tunes."

"The Skylark justifies my move from Capitol
Hill. It's cozy, it's interesting and wickedly
precious. The clever decor hasn't been coated
with smoke or stabbed with misdirected evil
glares. The waitstaff is sweet as fuck (the
friendly owners are there just about every
night and you can tell). The grub is super
tasty, the happy hour deals can't be beat. As
an added bonus, the bands that play (different
ones almost every night) don't suck, the
karaoke feels like it's being performed in your
living room (you don't have to wait 2 hours for
a turn) and when that's not happening, the
busboy/d.j.'s always playing something good. My
only complaint is that they're closed Monday
nights. See you at weekend brunch?"

Good food, great live
music
"This place defies your expectations in all
the best ways. So it looks like a dive
bar...brick building practically under the
freeway, abandoned house across the street,
beer neons. But inside is surprisingly artsy,
clean, and comfortable with a gallery space,
vintage ads, fancy wells (Cuervo!) and hot
Seattle bands for free...My friend's pasta
alfredo was tasty too. Free wi-fi, good food,
good music variety and nice bartenders, this is
my new favorite discovery in West Seattle."

"HOOOOORAY! We LOVE Skylark. One of the best
comfort-food places in town."
"I LOVE this place. It's so great,
unexpectedly stylish, and it's so nice to have
such a variety of bands in West seattle.
Bartenders are great, too!"
"I love Skylark! So glad I don't have to head
all the way over to Capitol Hill anymore when I
want to hear some good live music. And it's
always free! Can't beat that. Not to mention
their brunch and dinners are awesome. Nice to
see they're branching out into other types of
events as well. Please, don't ever leave!"

"Great bar to see a show at - the audio is
pretty fantastic. The staff will rock out to
the bands playing, too. The atmosphere is cozy,
laid-back and fun."
"Great place to see music, hang out with
friends and have a few cocktails. Staff is
friendly and atmosphere is laid back for a club
and the patrons are friendly."
